Trust your mama intuition — it won’t steer you wrong.
A few years ago, after many doctor appointments, blood tests, and even a cancer doctor confirming (thankfully) that my oldest son didn’t have cancer, we discovered he had Lyme disease along with some co-infections.
Through a rigorous treatment plan, he reached remission, and I felt so much relief knowing he was finally healthy. But then, earlier this year, he started getting sick again.
I just knew it had to be Lyme rearing its ugly head again. My intuition told me to talk to his previous doctor again and get him back into treatment, and sure enough, it was Lyme disease.
This time around, after a few months of treatment, I began noticing some unusual fatigue that didn’t seem to improve. It was so severe that everyone in the house began noticing it, not just his clued-in mama.
Something told me there was more going on, and I started to wonder if his cortisol levels might be off. It was that gut feeling — call it a mother’s instinct — that pushed me to request specific tests, even though it meant more appointments and discussions with doctors.
When the results came in, my hunch was right again: he had low cortisol levels, explaining much of his ongoing fatigue.

We speak with his doctor soon about the results and what treatment will look like for him. I’m hopeful for my son, as I also had low cortisol years ago and the same doctor was able to get me feeling better.
Through this experience, I can’t stress enough the importance of trusting your instincts and finding doctors who listen and genuinely believe you.
Our instincts as parents are powerful and grounded in an understanding of our children that no one else has.
And sometimes, we know when something isn’t quite right long before test results catch up.
Find practitioners who value your insight as a parent and work with you as a team — it can make all the difference in your child’s health journey.
And don’t take no for an answer!
