Tips for Traveling in Rome
Although I’ve not been to Rome yet, I thought I’d scour the ‘net for the best tips for traveling in Italy. Below are the best I could find and hope they’re helpful to you!
Wear Comfortable Shoes
Rome’s cobblestone streets are gorgeous, but they’re not kind to your feet. Bring comfy sneakers or walking shoes because you’ll be doing a lot of exploring on foot.
Plan for Early Mornings
Want to see the Trevi Fountain or the Colosseum without the crowds? Get there early! Rome is beautiful at sunrise, and you’ll have the city almost to yourself.
Stay Hydrated
Bring a reusable water bottle! Rome has tons of free public fountains (called “nasoni”) with clean, drinkable water. Perfect for refilling on the go.
Be Prepared for Small Spaces
Restaurants, shops, and even hotel rooms can be cozy (read: small). Embrace it as part of the charm, but pack light to save space.
Learn a Few Italian Phrases
Even a simple “Ciao” (hello), “Grazie” (thank you), or “Per favore” (please) goes a long way with the locals. Plus, it’s fun to practice!
Take Breaks (and Gelato Stops)
Rome is a lot to take in, so pace yourself. When in doubt, grab a gelato, find a bench, and people-watch—it’s an experience in itself.
Be Aware of Pickpockets
Keep your belongings safe, especially in crowded spots like the Vatican or on public transport. Crossbody bags with zippers are your best friend.
Don’t Overload Your Itinerary
Rome has so much to offer, but trying to see it all in one trip is impossible. Prioritize your top spots and leave time for wandering and surprises.
Eat Like a Local
Skip the touristy spots near big attractions and look for smaller trattorias where the locals eat. Oh, and don’t expect to find fettuccine Alfredo—it’s not really a thing in Italy!
Use Public Transportation (or Walk)
Rome’s metro and buses are easy to navigate, but walking is the best way to soak in the city’s charm. Just watch out for the chaotic traffic when crossing streets!
Take a Siesta Mindset
Many shops and restaurants close in the afternoon, so plan around it. Use the downtime to relax or explore a museum—it’s all part of the slower pace of life in Rome.
Book Tickets in Advance
Big attractions like the Vatican Museums and Colosseum can have long lines. Save time (and frustration) by booking skip-the-line tickets online before your trip.
Stay Flexible
The best part of Rome is the unexpected—a hidden courtyard, a charming cafe, or a street performer. Leave room in your plans to go with the flow!
Rome is all about the balance of soaking in its history, indulging in its food, and embracing its beauty at your own pace. Enjoy every moment!

Weather in Rome in Summer & Winter
Winter in Rome (December to February)
Winter in Rome is mild compared to many other European cities, with temperatures ranging from 40°F to 55°F (4°C to 13°C). While it’s not freezing, it can feel chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings. Expect occasional rain, so a waterproof jacket and an umbrella are good to have. On the bright side, winter is a quieter season for tourism, meaning fewer crowds at popular attractions and a more relaxed vibe. Plus, the city looks magical during the holiday season, with festive lights and Christmas markets.
Summer in Rome (June to August)
Summer in Rome is hot and can be quite humid, with temperatures typically ranging from 75°F to 90°F (24°C to 32°C). During heatwaves, it’s not uncommon for temperatures to soar above 95°F (35°C). The city can feel sweltering, especially in the afternoons, so staying hydrated and seeking shade is essential.
Mornings and evenings are more pleasant, making them the best times for sightseeing. Summer is also a busy tourist season, so expect crowded streets and attractions. However, it’s the perfect time to enjoy gelato, al fresco dining, and outdoor events!
Quick Tips for Both Seasons
- Winter: Dress in layers, carry an umbrella, and take advantage of cozy trattorias.
- Summer: Wear breathable clothing, pack sunscreen, and plan for indoor activities during peak heat.
Rome offers something unique in every season, so whether you’re bundled up in winter or enjoying the summer sun, you’re in for an unforgettable experience!

Final Thoughts
Rome is one of those places that sticks with you long after you leave. It’s not just the history or the incredible food—it’s the feeling of walking where ancient emperors once did, tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain, or simply sipping an espresso while watching the city go by. Whether you’re exploring as a couple, with family, or alongside your best friends, Rome has a way of making every moment feel magical.
No matter how you choose to experience the Eternal City, take your time and soak it all in. There’s no need to rush—it’s Rome! Enjoy the sights, embrace the culture, and make memories you’ll treasure forever. And who knows? Maybe that coin toss will bring you back one day. Until then, arrivederci!
