Having adult children can be complicated. You ne Having adult children can be complicated. You need to give them freedom yet keep them close enough to continue a good, solid relationship. They'll probably make decisions you wouldn't want for them, but it's their time to live their lives as they wish. You will see them fall down but it's a joy to then also see them pick themselves back up. They won't likely hold your hand or want long lingering hugs from mom anymore (though not always the case), but their subtle moments of love are tender and appreciated. They may want your advice but only if they seek it out from you first. So, keeping your mouth quiet- this will be important. It doesn't mean you can't be a guidance to your adult children, but when they come to you first, you'll have a much better shot of them listening to your advice. You may have to chase the relationship with them. Don't stop chasing them. Distance and time away from one another make it easier to fall away from a close relationship. They might break your heart, but they don't mean it. Just give them the grace to say the occasional hurtful thing or butt heads with you - they are practicing at this adulting thing. It's hard moving from being a mommy to a mama to a mom but every season has something beautiful unfolding in your children. I tell you what, it's not been a smooth process having two out of my three boys being young men now. We've all had to learn, grow, and give grace but I'm proud of my men and believe they will all make a great life for themselves. Their happiness in life is what means the most to me. I support them and celebrate them and love them more than they will ever know. If you have adult children, what advice would you give a mom with newly young adult children? If you're a young adult, what do you wish your parents did differently or what do you appreciate about them?
